This week is looking like a rainy (and possibly snowy) mess. Wet, cold weather can take a toll on your home’s deck. That’s why it’s important to waterproof your deck. That way, you can enjoy it for years to come.

If you’re wondering if it’s time to waterproof your deck, you can drop a few drops of water onto your deck: if it beads up, your deck is still good to go, but if it soaks into the wood, it’s time to waterproof again.

Before you get ready to waterproof your deck, check your local weather forecast. You’ll want to wait to waterproof your deck until you have a few days of dry weather back-to-back. Once you’ve chosen the time, clean your deck of any debris and sand off any loose stain or pieces of wood on your deck. A pressure washer is the ideal tool to help you prepare your deck for waterproofing.

Once your deck is clean and dry, apply your sealant. Use a stain brush and apply the sealant in the direction of the boards. Allow at least 48 hours for your deck to dry before you walk on it or put any furniture on it.

You’ll typically want to waterproof your deck about once a year, and more often if you live in an area that gets a lot of rainfall, or if your deck gets a lot of direct sunlight. The spring or fall are the ideal times to do this, when the weather isn’t too hot or cold.
